weiss hand selected feng wind gong

Weiss Hand Selected Feng Wind Gong

Wind gongs (also known as Feng or Lion Gongs) are flat bronze discs, with little fundamental pitch, a great windy wash, heavy tuned overtones, and long sustain. Don’t be fooled by others that claim their gongs are hand selected. Weiss Brand...

I bought the 40" (100cm) wind gong. Everyone says that it's best to pick one out in person, but there are no gong shops near me and so I put my faith in Steve Weiss and the Universe knowing full well that sometimes the Universe has a sick sense of humor. I was resolved to be grateful for whatever came to me, and I was not disappointed. I put it on the stand and gave it a few taps. It is responsive and bright for a gong of its size - and a LOT of fun. Had it for a few weeks now and it gets played every day. It's hard to not be attracted to it. Like all gongs, it responds differently to different mallets. This one responds well to every floomie I have tried. I've found that the Vic Firth GB4 or GB3 will drive it well, and a pair of GB4s will unleash Echos of Eternity...but you might want ear plugs for that. After a few days, the neighbors asked me, "What's that sound coming out of your house?"

Purchased an 18" wind gong for my wife to use in her sound bath sessions. We were delighted with the sound. I guess it's true, Steve Weiss sells the best gongs.

Wind Gongs

Comments:

I know have 3 Feng Gongs from Steve Weiss, a 36", a 44", and most recently, a 32". I love them all! I was most impressed by how beautiful the sound is from the 32": surprisingly deep and a lot of very interesting dynamics. I wasn't expecting that from a smaller gong. I also have a 40" Chau from SW, which I also love.

Comments:

I ordered a 30" Feng wind gong on the outside hope it could serve as a general-purpose tam-tam for me. I knew, as with cymbals, ordering a gong online without trying individual instruments was a risk, but Steve Weiss seemed to have great confidence in their gongs. I was thrilled with the instrument I received. The pitch and sound profile make it perfect for serving as an all-purpose tam-tam. It's got a surprisingly big sound. It's also remarkably sensitive and responds well at low dynamics as well as to bows and super ball mallets. The overtones are complex, and there are no undesirable prominent pitches. Rolling is a dream. I've used this on a couple of live film score performances with the symphony and it rocks. It was a good bit cheaper when I bought it, but I understand materials prices are probably higher now. Summary: if all the gongs are as good as the one I got, you can't go wrong.

A great gong for the working drummer

Comments:

I ordered this show for some of the shows that I am playing. For the price, this is an ideal gong for the working drummer that has limited space in the pit. It actually has a really nice sound!

I recently received my 36" Feng gong from Steve Weiss, and it is exactly what I asked for. I did the order personally over the phone with Jim who was super attentive and thorough. Took time out to call me several times and emailed me promptly with questions I had. I told him what "sound" I was looking for and he had his gong guys pick one out from their stock that met my requirements. Shipping was fast and more than reasonable. It is an awesome gong that sounds great. You guys made the gong buying experience first rate. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Buy these gongs

Comments:

What can I say; either you already know that gongs rule & the good folks at Steve Weiss Music sell them at a more than fair price with very reasonable shipping fees or you are not into gongs. It will take awhile to unleash even some of vast sonic possibilities from my wonderful 40" feng gong. I have only been playing it for a few weeks. Everyone needs a big gong. When will YOU change that need to a want? BOOM, for real !

Nice Gong, Beater too heavy

Comments:

The 26" gong added just the right touch to our concert, however, I received a heavy gong mallet that was way too big and heavy for the size and weight of the gong. I had ordered a medium mallet but somewhere along the way it got changes to a heavy mallet.

Best Gongs

Comments:

I have recently purchased both the 40" and 36" Feng Wind Gongs. Both instruments are wonderful, beautiful, subtle, and powerful: a clear fundamental, diverse and stunning timbres produced with different mallets, and a very long decay. You will not find these wind gongs at a better price! Shipping is very fast.

This beautiful gong did not disappoint. The sound is epic. I got it mostly as a decoration but I loved it so much I even bought some decals for it. Hit it just right and you and it will build up a huge sound with a great sustain. Highly recommended!

Comments:

I bought a 22 inch Feng Wind Gong on a lark, just because it was offered at a sale price. What a treasure! It has the necessary volume to cut through an orchestra, it has a wonderful rich sound, I can't get over how much music there is in such a small, easily-handled and inexpensive gong. I am happy with this gong and you will be too.

Gorgeous Gong!

Comments:

As a professional musician, I like giving musical gifts - namely, gongs! I had an 18" Feng gong and decided to upgrade for myself to a 22" Quel difference! Really a gorgeous, deep, rich tone. And happily, I was able to purchase it during the July 4 sale which offered free shipping. I've been shopping at Steve Weiss' every since his North Philadelphia warehouse days. The best!

Comments:

The gong I received sounds amazing! I'm always cautious about ordering gongs and cymbals without getting to try them out, but I'm glad I took a chance with this one. It is incredibly responsive at a wide dynamic range, and it sports a rich melange of overtones. Thank you, Steve Weiss Music, for the care you put into gong selection. I appreciate it very much.

Comments:

I purchased the 22" wind gong to compliment the 34" wind gong I bought used off craigslist. I Had never heard a wind gong in person before, only YouTube videos, so I don't have much to compare it to. This review is based off of the provided mallet unless stated otherwise. The sound wasn't what I expected (didn't really know what to expect). If you hit it in the center soft-moderately there is a nice almost bell like tone that rings out accompanied by a soft wash that is only has a moderate sustain. Strike the gong a little off center and there are more wash/crash overtones. Strike hard in the center and you get the main tone along with a crash that seems to muffle itself rather quickly. Using the super rub mallets I bought from this site only the larger one seems to make any sort of unique pleasant sound and only one sound when rubbed around the perimeter. Other wise the rub mallets just sound like rubbing and not singing. This is probably due to the smaller diameter and lighter weight of the 22". It does compliment the 34" chau well and I would make a good intro/budget gong on its own. The mallet that it came with sounds works well with the gong. I give it four stars because I measured it out to 21.5". Although I measured the 34" chau to 33.5" also, I don't know what's up with that. Cutting corners in Wuhan? With all the gong prices based on diameter and weight, it would be nice to get an actual 22" gong. This was however, the best price I could find online for a 22" gong. I bought the cymbal stand adapter for this one and it works well. Here is a video I made. https://youtu.be/IW7bRS1cPYI

Steve Weiss Music Response:

Gongs in the USA are typically listed in inches, but the manufacturers all create them based on the metric system - which is why your gong doesn't measure exactly 22". Most retailers call a 55cm gong 22" when sold in the USA, which is what you purchased.

I was fortunate enough to get a notice that SW had a leftover 40" wind gong in the warehouse... and at an unbelieveable price! So I bought it and am now totally drawn into it's beautifully complex handmade appearance and sound. Deep and dark and mysterious. I only gave a 4 rating due to a shipping mixup which required me to wait an extra week for delivery....but it was still well worth it! Thanks again.

These gongs sound fantastic and I knew they would. I wanted to have melodic gong sounds in my music. That is why I bought all the different sizes. I already purchased a 28" & 38" awhile back and wanted some smaller sized ones for higher pitches. I even got some free mallets with my purchase! Thanks guys, you are the best! Super low prices for the highest quality gongs, hand made the same way, in China, for two thousand years, and hand picked by you guys for the best of the best! Strong little wind

Comments:

I really like wind gongs. They have an instant attack and surprising sustain. The 8 inch wind gong is a thick chunky little monster with a wonderful bell/gong like tone and at least 10 to 12 seconds of sustain. The only odd thing about it is that the pitch it produces sounds like its a whole step HIGHER than my 6 inch wind gong. I thought the larger gong would produce a lower pitch and vice versa.

Power packed

Comments:

Do not let the size fool you.The 6 inch wind gong is a little monster of a bell tone. It is much louder than I expected it would be. Not as dark in timbre as the larger wind gongs and with a slight splash effect to it if struck hard. A very thick little gong with well over 8 seconds of duration.

Comments:

I visited the Steve Weiss warehouse with my six antique Himalayan singing bowls in tow. Jeff Willet spent a couple hours with me as we sampled Feng and Chau gongs and how they harmonized with my bowls. I couldn't be happier with my purchases (30" Feng and 24" Chau) and the whole buying experience was remarkable! I will never go anywhere else to make a purchase. These folks are top notch.

The gong sounds great. You can get many different tones from it depending on the implaments used and where you hit it. The center has more of a defined pitch while hitting the edge creates more of the classic gong sound. Yarn marimba mallets seem to be the best to use and produce the fullest sound on small gongs like this.

Wind Gongs

Comments:

I have hand selected wind gongs from Steve Weiss at PASIC and ordered blindly from the website. I have been extremely satisfied from both experiences. While picking out gongs is the preferred method to shop, it isn't always an option, and I completely trust the Steve Weiss staff to only stock high quality gongs. I have purchased a wide variety of sizes (6"-22") and each one has its own beautiful voice. Steve Weiss is my only online source for gongs.

Comments:

I purchased the smallest size of this gong which is 6 inches. It has a soft, bell or chime-like sound, but not enough of a certain pitch so it can blend in with other instruments well. I'm sure I will be buying some larger sizes soon for some more traditional gong sounds too.

wind gong 24

Comments:

Really beautiful feature in our landscape. The 24" wind gong is hung from a 30" round cast iron hanger the entire piece stands 6' ft tall. (I made a pair). You can see the sculptures from a distance there up a little hill, marking two different paths. The gongs draws company to them out of curiosity. The sculptures rest at the end of cobblestone path surrounded by wildflowers. My fiends and family love the adventure and the sound. Personal note: I use for Spiritual prayer and cleansing the land. For those of you are looking for a musical opinion my husband is jazz musician 45+ yrs and my son a reggae singer and songwriter and they loved the sound.
